Picture Book – I Stink!

I stink coverGarbage trucks. Ugly underwear. Puppy poop. An irreverant attitude.

Can you think of anything more attractive to pre-school boys? Kate and Jim McMullan’s I Stink! is a modern classic, a picture book that barely stays on the shelves, due to its popularity amongst its target audience. The plot is simple: a garbage truck explains what he does all night, including an alphabet of trash objects. The joy and the life come from the words and pictures.

The text is rapid, and conversation. It works best when read aloud with a lot of attitude and personality. The illustrations are muted, largely to represent the fact that much of the book takes place at night. The colors, when included, are all that much more effective. While girls seem just as delighted with the book, boys in particular seem to treasure this book. During one story time, I had a four year old boy recite the entire book from memory without missing a line!
