Juanita has recently moved from Texas to the Hilltop School. She is nervous about joining the class, but Yoko the official captain of the Friend Ship, along with other classmates, helps to make her feel at home. They teach her their class songs and share their lunches. Juanita is shy, and feels that everyone else has a special talent that she does not. Her new friends help her to see that she too can do something no one else can do.
The plot is simple and familiar, but also one that most children can relate to. The children and their environment could be taken from any elementary school in the country. That is if elementary schools were filled with cats, dogs, mice, and other animals that talked and wore clothing. Every page has an illustration and four or five sentences.
