When a little girl comes home from a school field trip, her mother asks her how the trip went. “Kind of dull,” the girl replies, “until ….”Slowly, bit by bit, the story comes out. The field trip to the farm was anything but dull, involving egg fights, giant boa constrictors, pigs run amuck, and other disasters.
With illustrations by the wonderful Trina Schart Hyman, Steven Kellogg’s book has quickly become a modern classic. The nonchalant attitude of the young girl as she simultaneously tells an exciting and marvelous story, while also getting dressed to go out on a go-cart with a kidnapped pig provide an element of sly humor into a story that is already jam-packed with laughs and excitement. The illustrations perfectly capture the sequence of events, and are filled with details that reward a careful examination of each page.
