Young children love silly books that let them show off their knowledge by being “smarter” than the author. Melanie Walsh has several books that allow children to showcase their animal knowledge in a silly and appealing manner.
Do Lions Live on Lily Pads has a very simple setup. A single question – such as the title – is posed, accompanying a relevant picture. On the next page is the simple answer, replacing the incorrect animal with the proper one. Children love yelling out the real answer, then turning the page to find that they are correct. While some of the featured situations are a little obscure for young children – burrowing moles, for example – most are simple and obvious, such as snail shells or fish bowls. The pictures are bright and colorful, featuring large cartoonish images.
