This book, written by Ann Whitford Paul is a Holiday House Reader, Level 1. There are between two and four sentences on each page. The text is written sometimes in the typical black and sometimes in white, which shows up against the darker pigments of the background illustrations. Repeated phrases help the reader’s progress.
The illustrations by Rosanne Litzinger are watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil. The figures are large, and slightly surreal: Snail has the body of a snail, but the head and clothing of a human. Colors are vibrant and represent a range of tones and shades.
