Mrs. Muffly has always been a little weird. But lately she’s been really weird, and the narrators believe it’s because she has a monster in her house. This MUST be true because she has been buying lots of sugar (to sweeten him up) and butter (to soften his toes.) What if the monster eats her?
This is a slight but enjoyable book. Children will have fun trying to predict what is really going on based on all of the food items that Mrs. Muffly is going into town to purchase. It also makes for a reinforcement of the order of the days of the week.
The illustrations, done by author Sarah Dyer, are done in a mixed media. While some sections are almost childish at first glance, the use of color and visual flow is clearly well-thought out. Children will be intrigued by the pictures of the monster and the somewhat silly things that the narrators imagine he might be doing. This would work as an excellent read-aloud book to a group or individual.
