Early Readers – Dogerella

Poor Dogerella, she is treated badly by her stepdog-mother. Meanwhile, Princess Bea is hoping for a dog as a present for her seventh birthday. When the king announces they will hold a ball for all the dogs in the kingdom, so that Princess Bea can choose a pet, Dogerella’s hopes are raised … but how will she get to the castle?

This cute retelling of the classic Cinderella story is long on charm. It is a Step Into Reading Step 3 book, intended for children in grades 1-3 who are reading on their own. There are two to four sentences on each page.

The illustrations are cute, featuring a large-eyed mutt as the main character and fanciful, poodlesque pets as the “evil” stepdog-sisters. The message that friendship and being yourself are important is woven throughout the general story. Children familiar with the original story will enjoy this retelling, as will those who are attracted to puppies and dogs.
