A puppy declares that he will always defend the castle, and then gives a myriad of examples of how he will do this, from ambushing enemies to protecting a blanket. Why will he defend the “castle?” Because you live there, of course.
The illustrations veer from the more or less realistic – a small dog barking at a spider – to the completely fantastic – the same dog riding on a horse while wearing a cavalier hat. The tiny little dog who is so bravely taking on “savage beasts” such as mice or insects will certainly resonate with anyone who has ever owned a small dog. The pictures are amusing and cute without being twee, which is a fait accompli in this particular genre of picture book. Whether dog owners or just dog-owner wannabes, children will enjoy the warmth of the sentiment behind the dog’s unconditional love.
